Betty Jean Harmsen

This is the book I wrote for Dana College's Math Competency Program. It provides the arithmetic and algebra that students need for success in courses such as:

- Business
- Biology
- Chemistry
- General Science
- Statistics
- The PPST elementary teacher's exam

The text also gives solid preparation for proceeding rapidly in an algebra sequence, should students need this to meet college requirements.

Traditional college algebra courses are not designed to meet the needs of students who are not majoring in mathematics or related fields. It contains much they do not need, and not enough of what they do need.

Therefore, before writing this textbook, I asked professors in the sciences, in business, in statistics, and in elementary education, “What is it that your students really need to know about mathematics in order to succeed in your courses?“

This textbook is the result of their responses.

The first half of the book covers arithmetic. The second half of the book first treats the solving of equations. After that, high priority is given to building skills in evaluating formulas forward and backwards, including the use of logarithms to solve equations containing variable exponents. There is also a complete coverage of unit ratios.
